Sam Byram SIGNED
Can he be another Cresswell?

Just seen his name connected with us a couple of times in the gossip/transfers sections but know little or nothing about him.

Obviously we are in need of a permanent right back as Jenkinson is definitely not going to be staying beyond this season unless he starts playing like Cafu all of a sudden. So can Byram come in and make an impact similar to Cresswell?

Love the idea of buying young English players from the championship who can step into a premier league team. Plus he's from Thurrock, I see, so could he be a hammer?

Hammers sign Sam Byram

West Ham United are delighted to announce the signing of highly-rated full-back Sam Byram from Leeds United.

The Essex-born player joins the Hammers, who have fought off strong competition to capture the promising 22-year-old, on a four-and-a-half year contract for an undisclosed fee.

A technically-gifted, fast and athletic attacking right-back or right midfielder, Byram has moved to the Boleyn Ground after four outstanding seasons in the first team at Elland Road – and cannot wait to get his Claret and Blue career under way.

“I'm unbelievably proud and happy to join a Club as big as this,” said Byram, who will wear the No22 shirt. “I'm just looking forward to what the future holds and hopefully I can achieve things with the team going forward.

“It's a childhood dream of mine to play in the Premier League, so to have the chance to get into a team like this and I just want to get my head down, work hard and hopefully get a chance.

“I spoke to the manager and he is one of the main reasons which attracted me to West Ham. I think he's done unbelievably well with his team so far, so I'm really looking forward to working with him and his staff.

“My uncle and my cousin are big West Ham fans and have bought their tickets for the new Stadium. My uncle was down here yesterday getting a shirt with my name on the back! It's nice to have them down here and they'll help me settle so I'm looking forward to seeing them.

“I'm also really looking forward to seeing the new Stadium in person. That was another big part in me wanting to come here. It's a massive part of the future of the Club and I can't wait to see and hopefully play in it.”

Born in Thurrock, Byram moved to Yorkshire as a child and grew up in York, playing for the city’s Schools team before joining Leeds United at the age of eleven in 2005.

The 6’0 player came through the Academy before establishing himself in The Peacocks’ first-team squad at the start of the 2012/13 season.

Byram made his Leeds debut in a League Cup victory over Shrewsbury Town in August 2012, scoring his maiden goal against Oxford United later the same month. Then just 19, he totalled 53 appearances and made a clean sweep of Leeds’ end-of-season Player Awards.

Despite being repeatedly linked with a move to the Premier League, Byram remained loyal to the Whites, being moved into a more advanced right wing position last season. He departs Elland Road having made 143 appearances and scored ten goals.

An impressive December 2015 saw Byram score three goals for Leeds and be named The Championship Player of the Month, and West Ham fans will hope he continues that outstanding form in a Claret and Blue shirt.

My Leeds MATE says he is more of a wingback and that he'd be gutted if if leaves

That is all I have to say on the matter

Re: Sam Byram
Saw someone mention him yesterday. Definitely worth a punt . Only seen him play against Forest the other week. Looked more than ready.

Re: Sam Byram
I like the sound of Byram and the fact that he's a local lad can only help, but it needs to be established if he's a RB or a winger, because if it's the latter then he will not be required.

Re: Sam Byram
He is an attacking RB who can also play in midfield.... exactly what we need.

If we do need to set up more defensively then Tonks has shown he is up to the task.

Re: Sam Byram
Should we be playing two attacking fullbacks at the same time? I'd probably prefer a solid defender on one side.

You'd better stop.

Re: Sam Byram
Would give us the option of playing 3CBs in a 3-4-2-1

e.g. Barcelona away in the CL

As long as we have wingers like Antonio, who know their defensive covering duties and put the shift in, there is no problem having two attacking full-backs.

You're a fan of attacking fullbacks, Nurse?

Re: Sam Byram
I've been banging on about this since the summer

He'd be perfect for us, just what we need. Wing back, full back, call him what you like, he knows how to defend

Far too good to be playing for a shit club like leeds

Darby, yeah.

I just resign myself to it every day.

Re: Sam Byram
My Leeds mate said he won something at right back and was their best player a few seasons ago at right back but struggled last year.
He also told me he knew West Ham had scouted him, cook and mowatt. We bid for Mowatt earlier this year but they wanted £8million

Re: Sam Byram
I'd rather a right back who is primarily a defender that can play a bit, than an attacking right back who can defend a bit. Get your main job right, there's more than enough goals in our first team starters to worry about the right back having to join in.

He's been on the radar a little while and sounds ideal, but isn't just about every other PL club after him too? Are we favorite to land him and if so why ?

I heard his family want him to come to us. Doesn't mean he will though.

Watched him play for Leeds against Wolves couple of weeks ago. Looked a handful and picked up two goals.

That being said, Wolves looked shocking that day despite scoring twice.

Currently playing as a right winger. Nice option to have.

Haven't they been going on for ages that we don't have any money to spend though?
